Also know as Cat City, it was named by Colonel Henry Washington in 1850. The city’s name derives from “Cathedral Canyon” to the south of the town. The canyon rock formations look like a cathedral.
Cathedral City started as a housing subdivision in 1925. It was incorporated in 1981. It is south of Palm Springs and north of Rancho Mirage.
There is a wide variety of housing in Cathedral City including single family home neighborhoods, townhouses, private gated communities and condominium HOAs.
8/26/20 Cathedral City Vacation Home Rental Update in the Desert Sun:
“Cathedral City leaders took another step toward phasing out short-term rentals Wednesday evening, despite vocal concerns from vacation rental supporters who say quality-of-life issues stem from unlicensed properties.
The City Council on Wednesday unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance to phase out short-term rentals by January 2023. The measure is a culmination of months of meetings, presentations and comments from thousands of residents on both sides of the issue.
The ordinance will be up for a second vote in September. ”
