Palm Desert is south of Rancho Mirage in the Coachella Valley. The city incorporated in 1973. It was first known as the Old MacDonald Ranch before it became Palm Village in the 1920s.
The Palm Desert Corporation started to develop real estate in this area in 1948. In 1951 the area became known as Palm Desert. Palm Desert is now a major shopping destination with El Paseo Drive, known for its luxury shopping.
Besides shopping, Palm Desert is known as the “World’s Golf Capital” with its numerous golf clubs and resorts with golf courses.
On November 19, 2020, the City Council approved amendments to the existing STR Ordinance. The amendments implement new regulations for STRs within the PR zones for properties not governed by a homeowners’ association (HOA).
All new STR permit applications within the PR zones require a written approval letter from an HOA having jurisdiction over the property. Existing STR permits within the PR zones (excluding On-Site Owner STR Permits), without a written approval letter, shall terminate and such uses permanently cease operation after December 31, 2021.
All other aspects of the STR Ordinance regarding allowable zoning districts, enforcement, communication between owners and neighbors, and operational standards remain the same.
